Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a "silent" skeletal condition characterized by reduced bone density which enhances the fragility of your bones and the likelihood of fractures. Namely, hip, wrist and/or vertebral body compression fractures.
The significance here is osteoportic fractures can lead to emotional and mental distress, increased risk of future fractures, loss of autonomy, increased reliance on others, diminished capacity to carry out everyday tasks, and even death. Alarmingly, approximately half of those that suffer a major osteoporotic fracture fail to regain their prefracture mobility and capacity to engage in daily activities independently.

Detection & Prevention
Get screened for osteoporosis with a DEXA scan. Assess your risk for fracture through FRAXplus.
Prevention starts way back before you are 20 years old or so. In that age range you establish your bone mass. From there you either use it or lose it (just like muscle). To regain some of that bone mass, restart or increase your weight-lifting exercises or resistant-band strengthening, take in that calcium with vitamin D, or take on some aerobics, carefully. Finally, speak to your physician about anti-osteoporosis medications that can either prevent bone loss or help rebuild it.
